Every online marketer worth their salt knows what a backlink is.

You, as a website owner, convince another website owner to include a link on their website that points back to your website. Like I said, simple right?

Well… Yes and no.

While backlinks in and of themselves are simple, understanding how to build backlinks the right way is not.

    Hey Ajay, I am a bit confused by your strategy, because it directly contradicts what Google says to do. I’ve audited your backlink profile and it looks like most of the links you built in the beginning were branded. Don’t these look like spam to Google?

    Check this article out(), which says to avoid branded anchor text. I’m curious what you think about this.

      Thanks for the rapid reply! I agree, every SEO expert is going to have their own opinion.

      You have proven that your strategy works, so hats off for that. My only fear was that implementing this type of strategy could result in a penalty or devaluation down the line.

      Here’s an example of a branded anchor text on a contextual article from a top tier publisher:

      They reference the company using their brand name as anchor text. It’s quite natural and happens all the time. Brand names also get mentioned often in listicles, quote sources and bios.

      In terms of comparing my tips to another person’s tips, there are tons of pathways to get SEO results. You ask 100 experienced SEOs about best practices for link building and you might be 100 different answers because there is a ton of nuance involved.

      If in doubt, run a top ranking competitor through our categorizer tool (). See what their percentages are and what type of links they have. You can take inputs from my strategy, other’s strategies, your own experience plus competitor analysis and come up with a game plan that you’re comfortable with.
